TCP Accelerator that can double the speed of sending BGAN e-mail and FTP is released

A new easy-to-install software application that can double the speed BGAN terminals send e-mail and data files has been released by Inmarsat.
The 'TCP Accelerator' software has been planned, designed and produced by Inmarsat to operate over our unique satellite-based mobile broadband service.
It is free to download through BGAN LaunchPad or from the Inmarsat website and should be installed on users' PCs to enhance upload speeds from their BGAN terminals.
"Inmarsat recommends that users immediately install TCP Accelerator to begin enjoying an enhanced service."

Office applications
TCP Accelerator is specifically designed for use with TCP-based office applications, such as e-mail and FTP. Although the absolute improvement seen depends on network usage, file size and terminal type, user tests have demonstrated that average throughput can increase by more than 100 per cent when the files are 2MB or less.

Server versions
TCP Accelerator is now available as a client-side application for the Windows XP operating system. A Mac OSX version is currently scheduled for release in August. Inmarsat is also preparing 'Network' and VPN 'Enterprise' versions of the software, which when installed server-side should further enhance overall transmission speeds.

At the begining of February Iridium released a new version of Direct Internet

In response to a small number of installation issues they have slightly modified the installation script. The latest version (2.0.2) is available on their website. Note that if users have already successfully installed the application there is no need to install this version as there are no changes to the features, functionality or performance of the accelerator software. The only change was the installation script.

One final very important reminder, the old Direct Internet 1.0 (Apollo) server will be taken off line on May 31st 2006. In order for end users to be able to continue to access Direct Internet services, they must install the new DI2.0 software and start using it prior to this date.

We are pleased to inform that our latest portable daylight panel, the IDG T-20F, has been approved by Iridium as accessory for their handheld satellite phones. The product information is now posted on iridium's website.

Our solar panels have earlier been approved by Nera, Thrane&Thrane and Hughes as power source for Inmarsat BGAN terminals.

Please contact us for further information.

Iridium is pleased to announce the launch of Direct Internet Data Services 2.0 (DI2.0). This is a replacement of the existing service (known as Direct Internet 1.0 or "Apollo"). The new no cost client software offers additional features not previously available for Direct Internet, including higher throughputs, pop-up window blockers and expanded operating software and browser support.

DI2.0 allows you to connect to the Internet from literally anywhere in the world. Unlike Direct Internet 1.0 (Apollo) the new version includes no cost client software.

Direct Internet 1.0 (Apollo) will be removed from service on May 31st 2006.

BGAN Beta Test and Terminals.

Inmarsat has officially type-approved two of the four BGAN terminals: the Nera WorldPro 1000 and the Thrane & Thrane Explorer 500. Both terminals passed a rigorous month of beta testing before earning type approval.

The Hughes HNS BGAN terminal is next to start the beta test program scheduled to begin in early December. Following type approval, Hughes plans to distribute pre-ordered HNS terminals as soon as early January.

The fourth BGAN terminal manufacturer, Wideye, plans to introduce their Sabre 1 BGAN terminal in March 2006. The terminals >>

Lower R-BGAN Airtime Prices
We are pleased to inform that we have lowered Regional BGAN airtime pricing – by as much as 40 percent off standard Regional BGAN Mega Byte (MB) pricing -- in 96 of the 99 countries where Regional BGAN service is available.

As of 1 January 2005, all Regional BGAN pricing will be split into two separate zones. Airtime traffic will be calculated based on country of usage, not country of activation.

For more information about the new, low zoned pricing or to learn more about your Regional BGAN discount, please contact us.

The storm over southern Sweden has left large areas without electrical power and with lacking telecommunications.

We have on very short notice delivered a great number of satellite terminals to among others the power companies which enables them to lead and coordinate repairs of power lines etc.
The extensive power failures have once again shown the needs of backup communication technologies where satellite communication is a reliable and cost-effetive solution.

The Tsunami Disaster has created a tremendous need for help and we are all doing what we can to contribute. In our efforts to assist Swedish authorities and aid organizations we have managed to rapidly supply large numbers of satellite terminals in spite of the fierce competition for available equipment.

We have also been able to arrange a successful re-distribution of satellite terminals within Swedish governmental agencies, so that the equipment arrived where it was most needed, when it was most needed. In this context we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Swedish Armed Forces for the invaluable help.

To facilitate their hard and important work in Indonesia and Sri Lanka we have donated satellite telephones to the Swedish Red Cross. We encourage everyone to contribute to the aid organizations who perform such a fantastic, and unselfish work in the stricken areas.
